In honor of Women's History Month, Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay invited our community to volunteer the week of March 8-12, 2022 to make headway at our Rodeo Creek Court site in the Live Oak neighborhood of Santa Cruz. More than 80 women volunteered their time – with saws, drills, hammers, and paintbrushes in hand! – to bring awareness of the role women play in the construction of affordable housing.

Whether women were learning new skills or practicing what they already knew, our local volunteers came alongside each other to show that while construction is still a male-dominated field, women can do it just as well. Volunteers worked under the guidance of construction professionals and built side-by-by alongside future Habitat homeowners.
Habitat gratefully acknowledges our Presenting Sponsor; Granite Construction (Granite and Grow) and our Golden Hammer Sponsor; DPR Construction. Both companies advocate for women in construction.

Community volunteers provide 70-80% of the labor needed to build each Habitat home. Volunteers have differing skill sets and availability, making it challenging to move at the same pace as commercial construction. But with team builds like Women Build, Habitat can move forward more quickly, bringing families that much closer to becoming first-time homebuyers in Santa Cruz County.
Women Build 2022 brought City of Santa Cruz Mayor Sonja Brunner and Santa Cruz County Supervisor Manu Koenig to the build site to show their full support of homeownership opportunities for low-income families in the counties of Santa Cruz & Monterey.

You can help support our fundraising goal of $15,000 for Women Build 2022! Check out our Volunteer sign-up to spend a day on the construction site or Donate to be a part of the solution to keeping our community diverse.
