Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay was delighted to welcome local Congressman Jimmy Panetta to our ReStore situated in the old Fort Ord Movie Theatre in Seaside.

Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, appliances and more to the public at discounted prices.

These unique stores serve a dual purpose - they provide affordable home goods to community members while generating proceeds that directly support Habitat for Humanity's mission of building homes, communities and hope through affordable homeownership opportunities for local qualifying families.

By accepting donations of household items and building materials, ReStores also help divert thousands of tons of reusable goods from landfills each year, creating an environmentally friendly approach to supporting housing initiatives.

Catherine Stihler, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay said, ‘We are honored to have our local Congressman visit our ReStore today to learn more about Habitat and our affordable homeownership model. We all know that a decade of fast rising home prices is pushing home-ownership out of reach for millions of low and moderate income households. In Monterey County, we live in one of the most expensive housing markets in the US. Habitat’s federal proposal to create a Homeownership Supply Accelerator, for non-profit and for profit housing providers, to build affordable starter homes would support our mission of building homes, communities and hope.”

“There is currently no federal program solely dedicated to support efforts to develop and construct starter homes for homeownership and allow families to achieve the opportunity of stability and benefits which comes from homeownership. At Habitat we believe the federal government must create a source of flexible financial assistance that supports the cost of property acquisition, new home construction and rehabilitation,” stated Gabby Rubio, Head of ReStores.
