My House My Home is a partnership between senior homeowners, Habitat for Humanity, the City and County of Santa Cruz, and Senior Network Services to build or renovate Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on the existing properties of senior homeowners.

According to the AARP, 90% of seniors want to age in place, in the property they have made home for years. Unfortunately, the most recent Census shows that there are over 300 low income senior homeowners in the City of Santa Cruz who are spending more than 50% of their monthly income on housing related costs and are at risk of losing their home.

The crisis of high housing costs is also impacting the local rental housing market. Santa Cruz County has been identified as having one of the least affordable rental markets in the nation with over 15,000 families currently on the Section-8 waiting list. Of those who have received Section-8 vouchers, over 400 families have been unable to find a landlord willing to accept the fair market rates offered under the program.

My House My Home program goals:

  • Help low-income senior homeowners keep their property and age in place

  • Build a new or renovate an existing ADU on the property of senior homeowners to provide additional income and adjustable living accommodations to help them age in place.

  • Bring existing homes onto the rental housing market for low-income families

Income limits for the My House My Home program:

Household Size        Maximum Income

  •      1                            $62,650

  •      2                            $71,600
