Please note that we accept applications only during our open application period. Habitat Monterey Bay opens a new application period prior to the start of construction for each project. We do not accept applications on an open or continuous basis.
How to qualify for a Habitat home.
Habitat Monterey Bay selects families based on three criteria:
Need for improved housing
Ability to pay an affordable mortgage
Willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity
Need: Families must demonstrate a significant need for improved housing, such as:
Housing costs exceed more than 30% of your monthly income.
Your living conditions are overcrowded, unhealthy, or unsafe.
If living in subsidized housing, you may be eligible.
Ability to Pay: In order to purchase a Habitat Monterey Bay home, a family’s source of income must be steady, verifiable and meet the following qualifications:
Able to pay a long-term mortgage, pay 1-2% in down payment and closing costs.
Gross income (before taxes) for all family members who reside in the home will be reviewed.
Must live or work in the County in which the home is built, Santa Cruz or Monterey.
Family’s gross annual income, based on household size must fall within the range listed below:
Willingness to Partner: Partnering with Habitat Monterey Bay means you will agree to attend classes, participate in events, be an advocate for Habitat Monterey Bay, and complete 500 (volunteer) hours of sweat equity. Sweat equity provides you with the opportunity to work alongside volunteers constructing your future home. Construction experience is not necessary. Partner households must complete 500 hours of sweat equity after they are approved.
